Observing the way the current Kuwaiti generation is being raised, many
young children are neglected by their parents and are either raised by the
TV or their nannies. Without their parents emotional involvement, children
are lacking the love they need and, therefore, is mentally affecting them
and making it difficult to carry out simple everyday tasks. When facing
problems, most feel like they cannot approach anyone about it because
they do not know how or they are afraid to reach out and speak about their
situation. This is where the importance of seeing a psychologist is
manifested. Seeing a specialist is looked down upon in most countries
around the globe, including Kuwait. This has been an ongoing issue for
decades, if not longer. As advancements in psychological research are
being made, the old ideology that seeing a psychiatrist/ psychologist is only
for “crazy” people has become outdated. The point of therapy is to help
people mentally and improve the quality of their life, even those who are
considered healthy. People tend to hide or neglect their feelings, not
knowing that they will eventually burst, making any situation harder for
themselves and/ or others around them. When mental clashes happen, it
can affect the way people work, deal with their family members, friends,
coworkers, etc. Moreover, if the surrounding people do not have an idea on
how to deal with a situation that resulted out of emotions and not logic, it
may cause further problems between members. The clash between these
individuals may create an unhealthy environment and might make
communication harder than it should. This is just a simplified example of
how one person can affect a bigger environment, merely out of suppressing
emotions. This problem could have been avoided if there had been
someone to talk to. Sometimes, a person may not be comfortable talking to
someone who they do not know, and therapy does not have to start with a
certified counselor. It can start with a family member or a friend. But what is
important is to address our mental health just as we address our physical
health, because it is equally as important. A change of one person can
pass on to ten and has the potential to shape a society as a whole.
